Overview
The Research section: which feature to use, the research list, and behaviour shared by every research feature.
Research is where you find out what is already true — about a market, a technology, a company or the people involved — before you commit to an idea. Select the compose button beside Research in the sidebar to start something new.
- Research Chat — conversational research across five depth levels
- Deep Research — multi-step investigation with patent search
- Trend Research — market trends as charts, insight and sources
- Financial Analysis — a company's financials as metrics and a flow diagram
- Idea Board — a shared whiteboard with AI diagram generation
- Chaos Map — an industry landscape map
- Summary Note — summarise documents, video and audio
- Issue Persona — generate stakeholders and interview them
Which one to use
| Feature | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Research chat | You have a specific question and want an answer you can act on now. |
| Deep research | The question is big enough to deserve a plan, or it involves patents. |
| Trend research | You need to size and orient yourself in an unfamiliar market. |
| Financial analysis | You want to understand one company's economics. |
| Idea board | You are working visually, alone or with colleagues. |
| Chaos map | You want to see who the players in a field are, grouped by category. |
| Summary note | You have a long document, recording or transcript to condense. |
| Issue persona | You want to test an idea against the people it would affect. |
The research list
Selecting Research in the sidebar — the name rather than the buttons beside it — opens the full list of everything in the section.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Filter by type | Narrow the list to research chats, boards, summary notes, and so on. |
| Search | Finds an item by name. |
| Bookmarks | List to items you have bookmarked. |
| Pagination | The list extends automatically as you scroll. |
What every research feature shares
The following behaviour is the same across the whole chapter, so it is not repeated in each section.
| Behaviour | Detail |
|---|---|
| Renaming | Every item can be renamed from its ··· menu. Names are limited to 70 characters. |
| Folders | Items can be filed into folders — see Folders. |
| Bookmarking | Whole items can be bookmarked. In Research chat and Deep research, individual messages can be bookmarked too — see Bookmarks. |
| Public sharing | Research chat, Deep research, Idea board, Trend research and Chaos map can be shared outside the group — see Public Sharing. |
| AI context | An answer can be saved to storage as a Markdown file and set as AI context in one action — see Files and AI Context. |
Deleting a research item permanently deletes every file that was uploaded inside it. If you may need a file later, upload it to file management as well — see Files and AI Context.
